SCAM ALERT! The Ellis County Sheriff’s Office has now fielded two separate telephone/computer scam reports within the last 24-hours in Ellis County, KS. The scam consists of a male caller with an Indian dialect claiming to be from Microsoft. The caller claims that they (Microsoft) has detected multiple virus threats on the call recipient’s computer and urges them to check it for viruses. If the call continues, the fraudster then convinces the call recipient to allow them remote access to their computer. The fraudster then installs bogus and costly antivirus software programs on the call recipient’s computer. Ellis County residents are urged to simply hang up on individuals claiming to be from Microsoft or an unsolicited technical company wanting to offer remote access to their computer. If you have been a victim of this type of scam please contact your appropriate law enforcement agency for assistance.
